Akiba Uhaki recognizes the need to continuously develop the leadership capabilities of the Human Rights movement leaders and Human Rights workers to meet the challenges inherent in the East African environment.

We promote useful links between research, reflection and flexible funding in Human Rights and Social Justice work. The Conceptual premise for our initiation and support of research, documentation and publications is based on the understanding that by doing so we widen the conceptual base, raise the level of theory development, and locate Human Rights and Social Justice praxis constantly on the frontiers of Social Justice and Human Rights transformation.

The East African region is faced with challenges of not only diminishing resources available for creative programs in Human Rights and Social Justice work but also a funding regime that is often unsupportive of rooted, organic, informal and creative initiatives.
